Types of Adware: Adware.Okcashbackmall

Many people use the internet to get on-demand service.  Your favorite music, videos, games and even TV shows now rest at your finger tips.  Numerous software applications are also available in which many of them can be freely downloaded.  Before clicking that download button, there are few important things you need to know about free software.

Some of the applications you download from the web come with much more than you bargained for.  One popular tag-along is a pesky program by the name of adware.  Adware is often bundled with freeware and shareware software, a move that allows the program author to recover their development costs.  Unfortunately, the end-user typically has no knowledge of this arrangement or the presence of adware ... until things start to go wrong.  Although this type of program is not always malicious, it has been known to perform suspicious activity such as monitoring your internet behavior, forwarding that along with information regarding the other programs on your computer to third-party sources.  The main focus of adware is to display targeted advertisements based on your personal interest.  These ads typically pop-up from every direction, often leading to spam emails and terrible system performance.

What is Adware.Okcashbackmall?

Okcashbackmall, more commonly known as Adware.Okcashbackmall is a recent adware variant that is considered to be very dangerous.  While many forms are suspect, Okcashbackmall is a clearly malicious program distributed by okcashbackmall.com, a website known to be infected with malware.  This program is usually installed directly from the website, where users are prompted to install an Active X plug-in to view a particular web page.  By downloading the plug-in, the adware program is given access to the user's system.  When adware.okcashbackmall is installed, it instantly begins to display an array of disruptive pop-up ads and messages.  This content typically claims all of the workspace on your screen, rendering normal activity useless until rebooting the computer ... until the adware software launches itself again.

How to Remove it

If your computer has been infected with this malicious software, it is recommended that you remove it immediately.  You can begin by following the steps provided below to terminate the process:

Step 1: Open the Windows Task Manager by simultaneously pressing the buttons "CTRL", "ALT", DEL" or "CTRL", "SHIFT", "ESC".

Step 2: Click the "Processes" tab on the Task Manager

Step 3: Type in Adware.Okcashbackmall to search for the adware

Step 4: When the adware process is displayed, highlight it and click the "End Process" tab, which should terminate all activity.  From there you can delete the process file:  okcashbackmallSetup.exe

The steps listed above will enable you to obtain brief control of the situation and work on a solution.  You next step is to remove this adware from your system in the "Add/Remove programs" utility.  While it has been known to work, there is a good chance that Okcashbackmall may completely restore itself because of a multiple infection.  In this instance you can attempt to remove it from the Windows registry or with the aid of an anti-spyware program.  A worst case scenario involves completely deleting the hard drive and reinstalling a fresh copy of the operating system, a move that may cause you to lose any programs or important files that were not backed up.
