How to Achieve a Cable Modem Connection

A cable modem is a device that is used to establish a broadband Internet connection on a network. Cable connectivity does not require the use of your telephone line and works very similar to a typical modem connection only the speed of Internet connectivity is much faster with a cable modem connection.

A cable modem is used in conjunction with a cable connection that must be obtained from your local cable provider and requires two different types of connections for your television and your Internet connection on a home network.

How to Set Up a Cable Modem

  • Obtain the Cable Modem: You can purchase a cable modem at any electronics retail outlet or you can obtain one from your cable provider. If you choose to purchase the cable modem yourself, make sure it is compatible with the network system provided by your cable company. If the cable company uses a specific brand then purchase the same brand to ensure compatibility with the network system.
  • Attach the Cable to the Coaxial: Once you acquire the correct cable modem it must be attached to the coaxial cable that is supplied by your cable provider. The coaxial cable helps the cable modem to communicate with a Cable Modem Termination System located in the office of your cable provider. This is what provides you with a continuous Internet connection so you do not have to continually log on every time you want to check your email.
  • Splitter Box: A cable modem connection requires a splitter box to enable separation of your Internet connection with your television connection so they do not interfere with one another. A splitter box can be installed by your cable provider.

  • Connect the Cable Modem: Before you proceed to connect the cable modem, make sure you turn off your PC and unplug it from the wall. Connect the cable modem using 10baseT cables which will connect the cable modem with the Ethernet card.
  • Plug in the Cable Modem: Once you have connected the cable modem to the Ethernet card and set up the home network, plug it into the wall and then check the modem for a row of blinking lights which will indicate that you are connecting to the Internet. The cable modem takes time to synch with the new service so you may have to be patient with this procedure. When the process is complete, boot up your PC and continue to install the Web browser and email software that is provided by your cable company.
